Including the one tiny but essential buy that’ll make all the difference.

Many adults with ADHD are exploring natural supplements for sleep, energy, mood, or focus - either as an alternative to medication or to complement it.
Whether you're looking for a more holistic approach or simply curious about how to support your brain, you're not alone in the number of adults, parents and partners impacted by ADHD asking:
Do supplements actually work for ADHD?
According to recent surveys, nearly 50% of adults with ADHD have tried supplements as part of their symptom management — often in combination with lifestyle changes, therapy, or medication.
Why Do People Explore Supplements?
Medication can be life-changing for some adults with ADHD, helping with focus, impulsivity and everyday functioning. Many people also find that it reduces anxiety and improves quality of life.
At the same time, some adults experience side effects such as reduced appetite, sleep disruption or increased anxiety. Others are curious about additional ways to support their brain health, energy levels, sleep or emotional wellbeing alongside medication.
For this reason, many people explore supplements as part of a broader ADHD management plan. Some use them instead of medication, while others use them alongside it. If you are taking medication, it is always worth checking for possible interactions or contraindications with your doctor, psychiatrist or pharmacist before starting a new supplement.
Finding the right supplements is rarely a one-size-fits-all process - which is why a degree of experimentation is often involved.
Approach supplements with realistic expectations, good-quality information and professional guidance.
And don't rely on online reviews alone - some products have surprisingly good marketing and surprisingly little evidence behind them.
Where Do Most People Start?
With so many supplements being discussed online, it can be difficult to know which ones are worth considering and which are simply the latest trend.
Some of the most researched and commonly used supplements among adults with ADHD include:
• Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Supports brain function, memory and focus.
• Magnesium Glycinate – Often used to support sleep and relaxation. (Just make sure you're choosing the right form of magnesium.)
• Zinc – May support attention, mood regulation and reduce hyperactivity.
• Iron – Low iron levels have been linked to worsened ADHD symptoms in some individuals.
• Vitamin D – Supports mood, immune function and overall brain health.
These can be a sensible place to start, particularly if nutritional deficiencies are present. However, what works well for one person may have little effect on another, which is why understanding your own needs is often more important than chasing the latest supplement trend.
Supplements People Are Talking About right now!
Improving focus is a priority for many adults with ADHD. New supplements are gaining attention in the ADHD and wellness world to help with ADHD focus naturally.

Here are 4 that are hitting the headlines:
Taurine – An amino acid thought to support calming and focus
Shilajit – A mineral-rich resin used in Ayurvedic medicine for energy and mental clarity.
Amino Acids – Like L-Tyrosine or L-Theanine to calm the brain by influencing key neurotransmitters like GABA, serotonin, and dopamine.
Adaptogens – Like Ashwagandha or Combi Mushroom Mix Gummies for stress regulation and mental clarity
They may be trending all over social media right now popular, however evidence varies, and effects can differ widely between individuals. When buying - check approvals, ingredients and watch for fillers, sugars, artificial dyes, and unnecessary additives.
The biggest hurdle for ADHDers
Yup you've guessed it - remembering to take them!
Let’s be honest - a lot of us have a cupboard full of half-used supplements.
For ADHDers, things like forgetting, procrastinating, getting distracted, or just feeling resistant can make it hard to stick with them long enough to notice a difference.
Thinking about how you are going to do this and what support you might like is crucial to consistent supplement taking - and results!
My top tip is to buy a pill sorter - this little gem will be your best friend in getting consistent with supplement taking.
Placing it somewhere REALLY REALLY obvious is essential. Get one like this that has space for several tablets, is BPA free and clear Morning/Night sections.
A quick note for partners
If you are reading this and are the partner of an ADHDer, it can be tempting to take responsibility for researching, ordering and remembering supplements on their behalf.
Sometimes this helps. Sometimes it can gradually create pressure, resentment or a parent-child dynamic within the relationship.
How couples navigate ADHD management is a topic in its own right - one I'll be exploring in a future article.
One Part Of The Puzzle
Supplements can be a useful tool, but what I have found is they work best when combined with self-awareness, practical strategies and a deeper understanding of how your ADHD shows up in everyday life.
What to Remember
✓ There is no magic supplement for ADHD. What helps one person may do very little for another.
✓ Start with good information, realistic expectations and professional advice where needed.
✓ The biggest challenge for many ADHDers isn't choosing supplements - it's remembering to take them consistently.
